In which I admit that I can’t identify with any character that’s particularly cool, and therefore almost didn’t buy the Dresden Files. But despite the cover, Harry Dresden isn’t as cool as all that…
I actually shot this video last week, when, although I’d been back from Tonga for almost a week, I was having many issues with the words. Which is not unusual, but there were even more issues than in the average video, for which I apologise. I’m also not sure why didn’t post it last week, but there we go. Ours is not to reason with the confused, jetlagged self. I’m actually still slightly astonished that I was able to string a sentence together.
You know, even more than usual.
So, onto the first two books of The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, concerning the exploits of Harry Dresden, wizard for hire. While that “I’m cool and dangerous” cover very nearly put me off, it was worth looking past it. Harry Dresden is just not that cool. He’s a bit hapless, constantly broke, and regularly gets himself beaten up while basically trying to be a good guy and a decent wizard. He also has a lot of terrible and snort-worthy one-liners, which are fun, but I think (for me at least) they work against the character. It’s almost like he’s so defensive that even the reader doesn’t get to see past the snarky armour, which is a problem I find with quite a few books. Snark is fun, but unless it’s offset with some insights into the character, they risk becoming nothing but a bundle of too-cool-to-care humour. But these books are full of action and magical adventure, with enough danger to keep you reading through a couple of long, sleepless flights, so we can forgive the snarkiness.
Did I love them? Eh. They were the kind of books that were ideal on a flight, or for a holiday read, when you don’t want to have to think about things to much. You just want the story to unwind in front of you without too much effort on your part.
Would I read more in the series? Probably, if they popped up on the 99p deal again. I won’t be hunting them down, though.
How about you, lovely people? Have you read The Dresden Files? Did you enjoy them? Do you like snarky characters? And what sort of books do you like reading on holiday? Let me know below!
