You know the sort. Village fêtes. Dry stone walls. Duck ponds. 

Also a surprisingly high body count, nefarious dealings, and the sort of formidable women of a certain age that make even the police reluctant to get involved.

Oh, and dragons. Obviously.

But I'd still be more worried about the duck pond ...

 The Beaufort Scales series are all standalone stories, and you can start anywhere, but the characters do of course develop throughout the tales, and there are some references to previous happenings as the series goes on.
